By all accounts, Luna has three strikes against her: ugly, fat, and sick. Despised by her gorgeous and sadistic mother, sidelined by her obnoxious and ruthless sisters, and adored by her fragile and henpecked father, Luna dreams of breaking free of her past. Haunted by marginalization, prejudice, and scapegoating, she dreams of becoming educated and successful. Will Luna gain power, prestige, and wealth with courage and fortitude?  It’s life or death for the inhabitants of Tryma. Trapped beneath the Earth’s core, they have but one chance of escape, during the Great Conjunction of 2020, as Saturn and Jupiter make their closest contiguous alignment since 1623. Existing inside the core by artificial enhancements, global warming above endangers their survival, and harvesting light from trees is only a temporary fix. With only one portal remaining, they enlist the help of an unlikely panoply of misfits, the Surface Dwellers who reside in G-Town, a community in the backwoods of Tennessee. The street-smart superhero, the craggy Missouri hillbilly, the go-getting schoolteacher turned waitress, and a bitter ex-con are Tryma’s last hope for escape. When a pandemic threatens the plan, a high-profile murder changes everything.

From Kirkus Reviews: “Ringwood’s debut historical novel follows a family through years of unpredictable marriages, seedy business ventures, and two major wars. Ringwood’s decades-long tale is dense with character detail and subplots. Caroline and Newt, for example, open the novel with similarly grim backstories, as both were suspected of murdering their previous spouses. The narrative teems with gleeful melodramatic turns, including affairs, hidden bundles of cash, and another Cisco joining the story in an unusual way. Many of the characters are flawed, and not all are likable; some are notably hateful or self-centered. Nevertheless, their shared journeys are consistently engaging even when the work spins off on tangents, as when one person who dates a Cisco undergoes a grueling Army tour. Ringwood maintains a tight narrative throughout (… ) It wraps up with a satisfyingly open ending. An absorbing, profound look at tumultuous American lives.” Since 1933,  Kirkus Reviews is a widely recognized mark of quality by publshers, librarians, and booksellers.
